Coastal areas, such as shallow water bays and estuaries, serve as nurseries for juveniles of many marine fishes and especially flatfishes. Parasites play an important role in these marine ecosystems, but it remains poorly studied. Little attention has been paid to parasitism as a potential factor of variation in flatfish juveniles biological performances in these habitats. Sole juveniles, Solea solea (Pleuronectiformes, Soleidae), that is a species of primary importance for fisheries, are infected by digenean metacercariae. MoRST is evaluating the Environmental Research output class of the Public Good Science Fund to identify inter alia the impacts of Environmental RS&T spending. Three specific questions are: How effective has the funding on Environmental RS&T been? Is Environmental RS&T having a positive effect by delivering real benefits to New Zealand, particularly to the environment? What influences the link between research and tangible positive benefits? Le développement de la mytiliculture sur filières en Bretagne. Bilan des travaux ArchiMer

Le bilan du suivi des élevages de moules sur filières montre l'évolution de cette nouvelle pratique culturale en Bretagne et met en évidence les difficultés qui demeurent un frein au développement et à l'extension de ce type d'élevage. Il s'agit en particulier de l'influence du milieu pour certains sites (contamination par le "Dinophysis"), de problèmes biologiques et surtout d'ordre pathologique, liés à de fortes infestations des moules par un vers parasite de la famille des trématodes et responsable de mortalités élevées pour les secteurs Sud-Bretagne. Offshore mollusc production in the Mediterranean basin ArchiMer

In the Mediterranean basin, offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development stems from the limited potential of lagoons and ponds, and centres mainly on mussel production. Suspension culture technologies are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shellfish farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved and their relatively low profit margins.

The objective of this study is to explain the decrease in mussel production, along the French coasts of Atlantic and the English Channel, through existing data and additional inquiries. This decrease in 2010 and 2011 had two components : a growth deficit and losses of mussels, due to detachment and mortality. Both inter-annual and geographic differences in rearing yields seem to be linked to phytoplankton abundance and turbidity. In 2011, severe droughts have impacted the level of rivers effluents to marine, limiting nutrients inputs. Potential economic impacts of providing for Aquaculture Management Areas in Canterbury AgEcon

This research estimates the commercial costs and benefits associated with selected aquaculture projects in the Canterbury region. Mussel farming employment will most likely be generated in coastal communities that at present have few employment opportunities. These communities are likely to profit as well from increased infrastructure needs for the marine farming enterprise. Any development in the marine farming industry will take many years to reach full potential. This means that the costs and benefits from increased marine farming activities will be staggered over a number of years. It is acknowledged that the gains might be achieved at different locations than the losses occur. The effects on other stakeholders are often uncertain.

Visualizing the social in aquaculture: How social dimension components illustrate the effects of aquaculture across geographic scales ArchiMer

Until very recently, governments of many countries, as well as their supporting organizations, have primarily addressed the biological, technical and economic aspects of aquaculture. In contrast, social and cultural aspects of aquaculture production have taken a backseat. Drawing on the observation that aquaculture development in Western Societies has largely failed to address these social effects across different scales and contexts, this paper offers a new way of capturing and visualising the diverse social dimensions of aquaculture. Zebra Mussel Farming in the Szczecin (Oder) Lagoon: Water-Quality Objectives and Cost-Effectiveness Ecology and Society

The Oder (Szczecin) Lagoon in the southern Baltic Sea is a heavily eutrophicated and degraded coastal ecosystem. We applied a systems approach framework to critically evaluate whether existing water-management measures achieve water-quality objectives for the river and lagoon systems. Our simulations reveal that the existing water-quality objectives for the river and the coastal waters are not sufficiently complementary. We suggest new water-quality threshold concentrations, which are in agreement with the European Water Framework Directive, and we calculate acceptable maximum nutrient loads for the Oder River.
